Pin of the Day: Crock pot chicken and cashews

I want to love my crock pot more than I do. I think I cook stuff too long or something because all the casseroles and stews I make in mine taste... beige. Or something. And don't get me started on bone-flavoured chicken.

But I will persist. This dish cooked by Preppy Paleo using a recipe by Six Sisters' Stuff looks super-yummy and not at all like it was cooked in a crock pot. Which is a bit of a worry, really. Don't you think this dish looks like someone roasted it instead? I will have to try it out and report back to you. Or you could try it out and report back to me?

Visit Six Sisters' Stuff for more recipes (it's worth clicking over just to see the line up of  the six gorgeous All-American sisters) or click on the image to see the pin!

Are you crock pot friendly?

Umm, I'd like to be crock pot friendly but it's not really my style... Too organised for me! This does look good though, maybe I can be motivated?!

"taste rather...beige" - love it! i so know what you mean. I am a bit suss of crock pots, plus my abode at the moment is not currently equipped with one. I think its also memories of childhood steak and kidney (bleurgh) stew that are off putting - the crock pot on the bench was a sure sign dinner was not going to be delicious! x

Tonight I cooked Greek lamb with potatoes, lemon and oregano in the crack pot (poor spelling intended). It was nice but it still tasted a little bland. I think the long simmer time cooks the flavour out of everything, so I am going to try over using herbs and spices, and see how that goes. Chicken and Cashews look very yummy!

We don't have a crockpot. Or a slow cooker. Or whatever. I use an old fashioned device called an oven. But then again I am home most days so it's not a drama for us (besides my husband has an allergy to leaving any kind of electrical appliance on while we leave the house so that clearly wouldn't work for us).

I think the slow cookers you can use to brown ingredients are possibly a little better but the ones you use where you just throw everything in - well the ingredients are just going to taste like ingredients aren't they? It's not magic.

I am a crock pot friendly girl. I started to use my Granny's old (bright orange adn earthenware) crockpot when we lived in the NT - it was so good when Olivia was a baby and I wanted real food but couldn't be arsed having the oven on to slow cook things...

Persist Bron - it's worth it.

Oh thank god, I thought I was the only one not in love with my slow cooker. I totally agree with you. And not only is it a bit beige tasting, it also always seems to taste the same flavour of beige, no matter what I put in it! Love to hear how you went with the chicken and cashew, it does look roasted or pan fried doesn't it?

I did make this recipe, as I commented on your Pin about it. I changed it a little to adjust to what I had.

The photo looks like it was stir fried to me, and if you brown your meat before slow cooking, you can achieve the same look (my new slow cooker has a brown/ seal function). Mine looked darker in general too?

Meat cooked on the bone has more flavour and is full of healthy minerals and gelatine. However, I made this with chicken breast because I thought it would be a nice change, and the kids might appreciate little pieces of meat. They did! I have never had much luck with lean meat in slow cookers, you really need some fat and bigger pieces of meat... this went OK, a tiny little bit dry, so maybe next time I'd use thigh fillets (not my favourite flavoured meat) or lovely legs.

Anyhoo, enough from me about the chicken.
